North Shore Stylin’ 2014 at VE – Duluth was my second comp of the year. After volunteering at Passion for Flashin’ at VE – St Paul, I tested my mettle by participating in the Men’s Advanced division at NSS.
For last year’s NSS comp, I spent a good deal of time training, both physically and mentally, and it paid off with a second place finish.
This year, however, I have been primarily bouldering and my rope skills seemed lacking as the comp approached. I had pretty low expectations for myself and it showed.
With enough time left for one solid attempt before general climbing was done, I got back in line for route #35, a lead climb that I blew on my first attempt falling at the last bolt. This time however, I was able to keep my composure and complete the route, filled with brand new Escape Climbing Holds, and improve my score card. It was this last climb that put me in fourth place in the Advanced division, which came with a shot at the finals.
I had very little left to give to finals and did not improve my position, finishing off the podium in fourth place. No matter, though. I went to Duluth with low expectations and did better than I imagined. Two friends from the Twin Cities Rock Climbing Meetup group placed 1st and 2nd in their respective divisions and we all had a grand time taking in the comp and feasting before and after our climbing session.
